Be sure to check your PENS Web site for reports and details. Current crime trends - Entering autos cases are up again.. The majority of the cases are occurring in commercial shopping areas, the Town Center Mall area near I-75 and I-575. In most cases the victims are shopping and leaving items, such as laptops in plain view in their vehicle. Currently, it is reported that the GPS unit is the most common item taken, during an entering auto incident. Victims are removing the GPS unit from their windshield and hiding them in the car; either under the seat or in the glove box ,or console. However, the bad guys are looking for evidence that there was a GPS unit mounted, such as the ring left on the windshield after the suction cup is removed, or the mounting bracket is present, minus the GPS unit. Having the evidence present leads the suspects to believe there is a GPS unit hidden inside the vehicle and they enter to find it. Citizens are encouraged to wipe away the ring left by the suction cup and remove the entire bracket. However, what ever type of GPS unit you have, makesure to leave no indication that there might be one in the vehicle. he apartment complexes along Shiloh Road, Colonial Grand, Shiloh Green Apt's., have been identified as another problem area for entering autos. It is reported that citizens are are still leaving their vehicles unlocked, while they are parked in their driveways. Please keep your vehicles locked at all times. What you and your neighbors can do- Please stop leaving your valuable items in your vehicle. The majority of these cases are due to vehicles being left unlocked or items in clear view inside a locked vehicle which will most likely result in a shattered window. Recent arrests in Precinct One- REMEMBER- Please take extra precautions with leaving items in your car while shopping. Please do not leave your new purchases exposed to theft. Use your trunk or take them home before continuing. Laptop computers, GPS Navigation Systems, I-Pods, purses and firearms will be hot items for theft. Ladies, please safeguard your purses while shopping. There is a place on the shopping cart we call the “steal me spot”, the baby seat. Women tend to place their purses there while shopping, frequently open and unsecured. We recommend securing your purse to the cart and make sure it stays closed. Should your credit card be stolen, report that to your lenders immediately.
